La Choza de Alejo Restaurant

LA CHOZA DE ALEJO RESTAURANT

This is the best Tex-Mex restaurant I have ever visited – and not only is the food delicious – the portions are huge and beautifully presented. This is only one of two restaurants where I was notable to finish the whole meal, to the later delight of our dog. But it is not only about the food – you will find an immense selection of Tequila, Mezcal and other liquors, proudly displayed in a sort of ‘museum bar’ above the central bar island. And the cocktails have gotten rave reviews from those who indulged.

THE SETTING, VIEW AND SURROUNDINGS

La Choza de Alejo (or Alexander’s Hut in English) is located in Uvita, just down the road from the Maxi Pali supermarket. Parking is plentiful, with a gravel lot bordering three side of the restaurant – you should have zero issues finding a spot. The restaurant is surrounded by a neighborhood of shops, homes and boutique tourist accommodation. Off to the east, the jungle-covered coastal mountains come into view. In many directions tropical greenery and trees surround the building.

THE DECOR

The restaurant is very open and airy, with full length shutters extending from the floor to the top of the sides. Above, a geometric ceiling rises high over the dining area and, together with the tied curtains the top of the restaurant, the view above is full of triangles and rhombuses. This is a very cool looking arrangement and is pleasing to the eye. Additional shutters in the upper levels of the structure and the numerous fans ensure an agreeable airflow all throughout the restaurant.

Wooden bar, chairs and tables, and trims, combined with the use of brown colouring throughout the building, give it a warm feel.

THE FOOD

The food here is incredible, and for this reason we keep coming back to this restaurant – whether to sit down with a meal or pick up takeaway for a quick dinner. As mentioned, the portions are more than generous and sometimes it is hard top finish a meal (never mind leave room for dessert)!

On the extensive menu are a variety of Mexican, or Tex-Mex, offers – tacos, burritos, soups, chalupas, nachos, ceviches, fajitas, enchiladas, wraps, Tex-Mex burgers, and many many others. The food arrives hot and delicious, with plenty of sides available. And true to the local customs, the restaurant offers its own variety of hot sauce, which also garners top reviews.

Many vegetarian and vegan options are also on offer.

THE DRINKS

I have mentioned the MASSIVE variety of liquors on the menu – many are lined up in glass cases above the bar, some in very unusual and interesting looking bottles. Tequila and Mezcal feature predominantly, but many other varieties are available.

Other then the liquors, the several pages of the drinks menu feature beers, wines, and multitudes of cocktails. The cocktails taste great and are very well presented.

Juices, michelados, mixed and bottles drinks and coffee are also available in many varieties.

THE STAFF

The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable around the menu and drink offers. They checked on us regularly to ensure everything was OK.

WILL WE COME BACK?

For sure – and in not-too-distant future! Hopefully this wonderful restaurant does not change ANYTHING about their food, drinks or service.
